![]() ![]() This is how Tree describes the ‘increasingly expensive’ regimen for wheat and barley before wilding at Knepp: Among them is the use of truly industrial amounts of chemicals. It vividly portrays the ‘normal’ farming practices that often escape the attention even of an interested outsider. An aptly named chapter 2, ‘At Odds with Everything’, is an uncomfortable reading. ‘Wilding’ by Isabella Tree begins with an account of the family’s industrial-scale intensive farm before they embarked on the project. Horrors of Knepp before wilding: the chemicals The book describes the history of a wilding project they started at Knepp in 2000. She is married to Sir Charles Burrell, and together they manage the 3,500-acre Knepp estate in West Sussex, UK. Isabella Tree is an established author who published several other books on nature and travel. It is impossible not to be influenced by it – it changes how its readers perceive nature, farming, countryside, and their own gardens. ‘ Wilding‘ by Isabella Tree ( Wilding: The Return of Nature to a British Farm, Picador, 2018) is one of the most inspiring books recently published. ![]()

![]() Maddy is an interesting main character to follow through the world she ends up being a very powerful character, but because of her age and innocence, she’s not quite in tune with all the subtleties of the world. It’s a sprawling fantasy, in the Grand High Fantasy style: adventure, twists, turns, multi-perspectives and even a somewhat confusing ending. It’s based on Norse mythology, something I found fascinating, and is quite impossible to summarize. ![]() If that sounds really confusing, don’t worry: it is really confusing to summarize this huge 521-page fantasy. One-Eye sends Maddy on an adventure that will lead to a new end and a new beginning for everyone. The End of the World was just a new beginning, and she has powers she never knew. Then, one day when she’s 14, her world shifts: all the things she’s been taught to believe about the Order and the Word - the religious organization that rules the Middle World - are put into question. ![]() ![]() She has no friends, except for a wandering traveler that goes by the name of One-Eye whom she only sees once a year at Harvest time. Maddy Smith is basically a nondescript resident of the small village of Malbry in the Middle Worlds - except for the runemark on her hand which brands her a bit of an outcast, but she doesn’t pay that much attention. ![]() ![]() ![]() So by the time the story rolled around and the words “This is really good” came out of the otherwise down-turned lips of my fifth grade teacher, I was well on my way to understanding that a lie on the page was a whole different animal - one that won you prizes and got surly teachers to smile. After lots of brouhaha, it was believed finally that I had indeed penned the poem which went on to win me a Scrabble game and local acclaim. That year, I wrote a story and my teacher said “This is really good.” Before that I had written a poem about Martin Luther King that was, I guess, so good no one believed I wrote it. ![]() Of course I got in trouble for lying but I didn’t stop until fifth grade. I loved lying and getting away with it! There was something about telling the lie-story and seeing your friends’ eyes grow wide with wonder. Not “Once upon a time” stories but basically, outright lies. ![]() I loved and still love watching words flower into sentences and sentences blossom into stories. I chalked stories across sidewalks and penciled tiny tales in notebook margins. (It was not pretty for me when my mother found out.) I wrote on paper bags and my shoes and denim binders. I remember my uncle catching me writing my name in graffiti on the side of a building. I used to say I’d be a teacher or a lawyer or a hairdresser when I grew up but even as I said these things, I knew what made me happiest was writing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() “It is not easy to uncover the inner workings of an essentially secretive political establishment,” the New York Times‘ review of the book notes. Overall, the book tells the tale of a small number of ultrarich donors-including Richard Mellon Scaife and Harry and Lynde Bradley-who did much to create the modern conservative moment, with a strong emphasis on billionaires Charles and David Koch. Prize-winning New Yorker reporter Jane Mayer made headlines recently when she released a new book, Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right, that revealed how the father of the Koch brothers once helped build a major oil refinery in Nazi Germany that was a pet project of Adolph Hitler.
